3 Hip Stretches Your Body Needs

Tight hips and hamstrings seem to becoming very common in today's society. With most of us either working at a desk, sitting behind a steering wheel or standing on our feet all day, it is easy to feel discomfort in those areas. However, this discomfort could cause an injury if not treated with proper care.

Our hips are a very important muscle as they are connected to our low back and our glutes (biggest muscle in the human body). These muscles are used when we are moving and when one of these areas becomes tight, the other muscle group will lengthen making it harder to function safely & efficiently. Without glute activation, our low back is not secured for movement and is in danger for high stress on the muscles.

Here are my top 3 hip stretches you can add into your daily routine or at the end of each workout.

1. Overhead Reach + Hip Hinge into Squat

mobility, stretching, hipmobility

  • Breathe in.
  • Push hips back as if you were going to touch your butt cheeks to the wall behind you.
  • Extend your arms straight out over your head as you hinge hips back.
  • Descend into deep squat.
  • Breathe out and return to full stand.
  • Repeat for reps.

2. Pike to Push Up

  • Start in push up position.
  • Breathe in.
  • Perform push up and as you come up, push your hips up to the sky.
  • Breathe out.
  • Extend your arms and hamstrings until you feel a stretch.
  • Repeat for reps.

3. Runner's Stretch

  • Start in loaded beast position, by you pushing your hands into the ground to load your weight back into your feet.
  • Breathe in.
  • Explode forward until right foot is next to right hand on the ground.
  • Rotate chest towards lead foot and reach fingers to the sky, while your other arm is driving straight into the ground.
  • Breathe out.
  • Hips and spine should be in neutral when extended into stretch.
  • Bring back to loaded beast position and alternate to left side.
  • Repeat for reps.

Hope these stretches help, please let me know if you have any questions along your journey!

Sending so much peace & positivity!

Steph
